Bon vendredi
Happy Friday
Merci to our School Council who organized and hosted the Fall Fling last night. Special thanks to Claire Knechtel, Erin Sharp and Marcie MacKimmie for setting up, taking down and ensuring last night was such a success for all our students. It was fun to see the students (and Parents) dancing, mingling, sharing a meal and some treats together. We enjoyed “home coming” too and seeing so many students return from Elboya! What a wonderful way to celebrate our school community, we had a great night! Thank you
Remember to order your Special Lunch today Sept 20 as it is the last day to order for next week.
Meet the Teacher Sept 26 / 27
We will be having three rounds of Parent / Teacher / Student Conferences this 2024 – 2025 school year. Our first round will be September 26 2024 from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM. This round will be Parent led. You will have a chance to meet the teacher and to see the classroom.
You will see posted some of the classroom routines. It is a brief event to calm your fears and to invite you all in for an introduction to the year. There will be no scheduled interviews on this evening for Grades 1 - 4.
On September 27 we will be having scheduled IPP (Individualized Program Plan) Meetings for coded students and for students teachers feel they need to meet for social / emotional or behavioral reasons. https://williamreid.cbe.ab.ca/teacher-conference
Kindergarten: Meet the Teacher
Due to the number of students in kindergarten classes, we will be offering scheduled 10-minute conferences instead. This will be an opportunity for you to share how your child is doing in kindergarten so far. It is not an academic check-in, as we are still getting to know each other. Conference bookings will open on Monday and close on Wednesday at 3:30 PM. Please use your MyCBE account to book your time.
Alberta Education Assessments
This is the last week for the mandatory screening assessments in Grade 1, 2 and 3. Our These teachers will be finishing assessments this week and entering the data by Sept 27, 2024.
The following types of assessments will be completed by each student in Grades 1-3 this week:
- The Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) Digits test requires naming digits as quickly as possible, thus revealing the automaticity of many of the same cognitive and linguistic skills central to reading.
- The Phonological Awareness Screening Test (PAST) purpose is to assess phonemic awareness. Phonological awareness, or the awareness of and ability to work with sounds in spoken language is foundational for decoding, blending, and word reading.
- Letter Name and Sound Test (LeNS), assesses knowledge of the names and sounds of letters, and common multi-letter graphemes. The LeNS is designed to screen learners for foundational phonics skills to develop into independent readers.
- The Castles and Coltheart Reading Test 3 (CC3) is a word reading test of single word reading (decoding and whole word recognition). It is designed to identify the nature of reading difficulties and provides next steps for instruction and intervention.
- Provincial Numeracy Screening Assessments look at knowledge of symbolic numbers. Results of the assessment can be used to help teachers identify and address gaps in foundational understanding of numbers.
These universal screeners do not replace day-to-day teacher observations and classroom assessment and do not have any impact on formal reporting processes such as report cards. Rather, the results of universal screeners help inform planning for next steps such as targeted interventions or instructional planning and are not used to determine grades.
William Reid Casino Fundraiser (Nov. 20 and Nov. 21)
Mark your calendars! The William Reid School Casino Fundraiser is happening on November 20 and 21, and we will need volunteers to cover shifts at a nearby casino to pull it off! This fundraising event brings in a third of our total fundraising dollars for the year, so it is particularly important to all our school programs that it is successful! Please keep these dates in mind as you start planning into the Fall, and we look forward to seeing you then!
